A Critical Time

Dear Friends,

I am writing to inform you of the exciting mission of a new coalition that has been formed in Maryland. The Maryland Coalition for Ethical Research (MCER) has been formed to convince the Maryland General Assembly that should not invest money in human cloning and embryonic stem cell research.

Membership of the MCER is limited to Maryland professionals in the fields of medicine, science and ethics, united in their desire to see research in Maryland guided by strict ethical guidelines. Whether or not you are eligible for membership, you can help by sending this information to pro-life doctors, scientists and ethicists whom you know.

This is a critical time for the people of Maryland to let their voices be heard. As you know, there is overwhelming political pressure to financially support embryonic stem cell research -- despite the futility of such research, the destruction of innocent human life that it involves, and the real promise of ethical research involving adult stem cells and umbilical cord blood.

This political pressure is being felt in Maryland perhaps more than in any other state. Senator Paula Hollinger, the chair of the committee that will hold a hearing on such legislation, is also the sponsor of the bill. She has announced her intention to ensure that her bill to fund cloning and embryonic stem cell research will be the first bill out of her committee in January.

Click here for a letter written by the interim executive director of the coalition, Lyle Sensenbrenner, MD, and a flyer describing the MCER.

Lastly, I would like to thank Nancy Fortier and the Maryland Catholic Conference for providing this information and working to build the membership for the new coalition. Please note, the MCER is not a faith-based organization, and is open to all professionals supporting ethical research in Maryland, regardless of religious belief.

Yours in communion for innocent human life,

Anthony R. Souza
