| A Contest Where No One Wins
Local "shock jock" Elliot Segal of the Washington, D.C. radio station WWDC-FM (DC101) recently held a very disturbing contest on his radio program -- offering a prize for the listener who had the most abortions. The "contest" was held in the morning hours, during which people were commuting to work and school. Several callers were seemingly proud of their abortions. One caller, identifying himself as K-Dog, claimed to be responsible for 16 abortions with two different women. His second wife called in to verify that five of their children had been aborted. Such behavior demonstrates a complete lack of respect for the value of human life. Even those who promote a "rights-over-life" agenda can recognize that abortion is not a good to be sought after. Yet, Mr. Segal's show seems to suggest that abortion is as natural as childbirth and is morally good (or at best, morally neutral). Clearly, abortion should not be encouraged as back-up birth control and as a source of pride. The issue is less about what is or is not allowed on the airwaves, and more about social responsibility to uphold the common good. How might Mr. Segal's encouragement of "K-Dog" and his other listeners' behavior negatively affect a teenage boy who already lacks respect for his female classmates or a girl struggling with an unexpected pregnancy? What message is he sending to innocent children, who will be facing questions about life and sexuality as they grow older? Send a pre-written letter to DC101's parent company, Clear Channel Communications. Or, use your own words to express your disappointment and disapproval:
