| Confirming Judicial
Nominees BACKGROUND: Should there be a judicial "litmus test"? In 1973, the U.S. Supreme Court decisions "Roe v. Wade" and "Doe v. Bolton" created a "right" to abortion throughout all nine months of pregnancy, for virtually any reason whatsoever.(1) The majority of Americans disagree with US abortion laws and believe that innocent, defenseless human beings should be protected from harm.(2) However, the abortion industry has used "pro-choice" rhetoric to convince many that federal and Supreme Court judicial nominees should be submitted to a "litmus test" and rejected if they do not wholeheartedly support the "Roe v. Wade" decision.(3) This "rights over life" mentality reduces the dignity of the human person merely to one's ability to "choose" and fails to uphold an objective, common good. Why is the abortion industry quick to label and excuse qualified judges as "extremists"? What is so threatening about judicial nominees who, like most Americans, believe that innocent human life should be protected? Although President Bush has nominated several very qualified judges to fill vacancies in federal courts, some Senators, by way of filibuster, are preventing the Senate from voting for or against them. Let us encourage our Senators to confirm these qualified judicial nominees! ACTION: Please contact Maryland Senators Paul Sarbanes and Barbara Mikulski If you are a Maryland resident, please take a moment to send a pre-written letter to the Maryland Senators, urging them not to require support for Roe v. Wade as a condition for accepting judicial nominees, and to oppose filibusters of qualified judges. Or, contact them directly: SOURCES: For more information, ... 1, 2 - USCCB Reality Check Postcards 3 - Visit EndRoe.org - sponsored by The National Committee for a Human Life Amendment (NCHLA) and the Secretariat of Pro-Life Activities, United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) HOW CAN I SUPPORT THE WORK OF PRO-LIFE MARYLAND?
