Congressman Introduces Legislation to Kill More Embryos

This week Congressman Charles Bass (R-NH) will attempt to repeal President Bush's policy on human embryonic stem cell research. President Bush's policy allows for federal funding for research using human embryonic stem cell lines established before August 9, 2001. Representative Bass wants to lift the restriction of using existing stem cell lines, opening the door to further exploitation of human life for faulty science. Congressman Bass and other supporters of his, and similar proposals, often mislead or are misled themselves, regarding the science of embryonic stem cell research. Supporters hoping to profit from a change in policy continually play on the emotions of suffering patients giving them empty promises of cures, neglecting to inform them of scientific advances resulting in real cures.

There should be a bigger push, both in Congress and in the private sector, for adult and cord blood stem cell research. These forms of research are not only already helping patients, but also are ethically sound. Life should not be created to be killed, and women should not be treated as mere commodities to produce more human embryos for experiments. Why are taxpayer monies constantly wasted on ineffectual and unethical embryonic stem cell research while ignoring the human patients who can be helped with existing ethical science? The answer can be found in misleading legislation like that from Representative Bass.
