Tony Perkins' Washington Update Lights, Cameras - How About Some Action
In front of the lights and cameras of NBC's "Meet the Press" last Sunday, Senator John Kerry (D-MA) called parental notification for minors obtaining abortion services "important" and that he was "for it." These were surprising comments coming from Senator Kerry who has a dismal pro-life record. There just happens to be a bill before Congress that would address this issue. The bill, sponsored by Senator John Ensign (R-NV) in the Senate and Representative Illeana Ros-Lehtinen (R-FL) in the House, is the Child Custody Protection Act (CCPA). CCPA would make it a federal offense to transport a minor across state lines for an abortion to circumvent a state law requiring parental involvement in a minor's abortion. CCPA is also one of FRC top ten legislative priorities for the 109th Congress. Yesterday, FRC Vice President of Government Affairs, Connie Mackey, sent a letter to Senator Kerry asking for Senator Kerry's support of the Senate version of the Child Custody Protection Act (S. 8). With such bipartisan support the CCPA should easily pass the Senate. We will keep you informed as to whether Senator Kerry will take actions on his words in front of the cameras.
